Rail link opens in Cambodia

Toll Royal Railway, the company that won the contract to operate the Cambodia railway system, said Friday the line between Phnom Penh and Touk Meas has officially opened.

The company said the volume of rail traffic would increase once tests have been completed. This section of the line will be extended to the Sihanoukville container port and is expected to be completed and fully operational by May 2011.

'With the launch of an operational rail freight service between Phnom Penh and Touk Meas, cargo can be transported more easily around this area while also reducing vehicle congestion and truck over-loading on the roads,' said Wayne Hunt, chief executive officer and president of Toll Group's logistics division.

Toll worked closely with Asian Development Bank and AusAID on the project.
