Rail strike in Antwerp

   The liner carrier Mediterranean Shipping Co. said Friday that the Port of Antwerp has been hit by an unscheduled rail strike by Belgian train drivers.
   The strike, which began Thursday afternoon, has “seriously affected” rail traffic to and from the port, which serves as MSC’s hub in Northern Europe.
   “For today and tomorrow no train to and from Athus will leave or arrive the port of Antwerp,” MSC said in a notice. “Our own MSC shuttles are still running as per schedule but no guarantees can be given for possible incidents happening during the course of the day.
   “As this is a pure case of ‘Force Majeure’ MSC will not absorb any charges for storage at port terminals or any costs relating to late delivery/departure of import/export containers.”
   Earlier this year, Antwerp was hit by a strike of port pilots. Around two-thirds of Antwerp’s volume comes from MSC.
