RailAmerica’s carloads drop 5.6% in May

RailAmerica Inc., a holding company for 42 short-line railroads operating on about 7,800 track miles in the United States and Canada, said its freight carloads dropped 5.6 percent in May to 103,464 from 109,648 in the same month 2005.

“Ten out of 14 commodity groups had decreased shipments in May. The carload decrease was derived primarily from lower shipments of Petroleum Products, Metals, Paper Products and Bridge Traffic,” RailAmerica said.

For the year to date, RailAmerica’s total carloads are down 2.8 percent to 536,108 from 551,519 in the same five-month period 2005.
