Report details intra-Northern Europe container trade

   The maritime consultant Dynamar this week released a new report detailing the intra-Northern Europe container trade, including a breakdown of the 160 services on the trade.
   The intra-Northern European trade includes 40 different carriers deploying container, roll-on/roll-off and multipurpose ships with container capacities of 100 to 3,400 TEUs.
   The report finds Unifeeder provides the most ships in the trade, but Mediterranean Shipping Co. suppplies the most total capacity and “K” Line operates the longest service within the confines of the trade (between northern Spain and Gothenburg, Sweden).
   The trade includes more than 130 ports in 19 countries, with the report offering profiles of each carrier. It also details operating constraints, including ice that blocks lanes in the Baltic Sea, and the preference for cargo to be stacked on Euro-pallets that generally require the use of 40-foot or 45-foot boxes.
   Nearly half the capacity in the total trade is tied to Northwest continental Europe, with another 31 percent tied to the Baltic.
