Report says 6,000 Panama Canal workers strike

The Associated Press said Tuesday that about 6,000 workers involved in the expansion of the Panama Canal have gone on strike for higher wages.
The news agency quoted a representative for the workers as saying they want the base wage raised from $2.90 per hour to $4.90, and the wage for the most skilled workers raised from $3.52 per hour to $7.10.
The employees say the multinational construction consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal has failed to pay them some overtime and vacation pay. They are also complaining about safety deficiencies, AP reported.
