Reports: China breaks 100 million TEU mark

Reports: China breaks 100 million TEU mark Annual container throughput on the Chinese mainland hit the 100 million-TEU mark on Wednesday, up from 93 million TEU last year.
   State-owned newspapers like the People’s Daily and China Daily carried reports about a ceremony on Wednesday in the port of Tianjin where officials highlighted the country’s explosive maritime trade growth.
   Song Dexing, a Ministry of Communications official, was quoted as saying “China’s container transportation sector was about 20 years behind other countries, but its development speed in the past 34 years has been rarely seen in the world.”
   Last year, the country handled 5.6 billion tons of cargo. Twelve ports recorded cargo throughput of more than 100 million tons, with Shanghai handling 530 million tons, making it the world’s busiest port.
