RILA urges product safety legislation to move quickly through Congress

The Retail Industry Leaders Association on Wednesday commended House and Senate conferees for completing work on product safety legislation and urged swift passage of the conference report.

RILA said it urges Congress to act swiftly to move the legislation to the president's desk for his signature.

'RILA and its members consider consumer safety to be paramount and are committed to implementing these new standards quickly,' said Katherine Lugar, senior vice president for government affairs, in a statement. 'Bipartisan leadership on both sides of the Capitol deserves credit for their work to write strong and effective rules to ensure product safety. Combined with exhaustive efforts by industry, this bill will do much to restore consumer confidence.'

The final bill contains significant new protections for children's products, including new federal limits on lead and phthalates, mandatory testing and certification requirements, and strong enforcement provisions. It reconciles two bills previously approved by the House and Senate in December and March, respectively.
