Revenues for the second quarter were $707.36 million, up 13.9 percent over the $621.12 million for the second
quarter of 1999.
Total tonnage was up 6.9 percent, less-than-truckload tonnage was up 8 percent and truckload tonnage rose 2.1
percent. Revenue per ton for the quarter increased 6.6 percent, while operating expenses rose 6.2 percent.
“This is our third quarter of double-digit top-line growth,” said Michael W. Wickham, chairman and chief
executive officer of Roadway Express. “During the quarter our regional LTL revenues increased 16 percent and
our specialized market offerings grew 21 percent. This reflects the success of our strategy to penetrate the
more profitable and faster growing regional markets.”
