Rock stops Alaska Railroad freight train

An Alaska Railroad freight train struck a large rock north of Girdwood along the railroad's Turnagain Arm on Sunday afternoon, causing a rupture in the locomotive’s fuel tank.

Crews estimate that about 1,200 gallons of fuel spilled. About 100 gallons of diesel fuel have been recovered and a protective boom was placed around the locomotive, the railroad said in a statement.
