Russian Federation supports IMO initiatives
Senior representatives of the Russian Federation have endorsed environmental issues promulgated by the International Maritime Organization during a visit to Russia by Efthimios E. Mitropoulos, secretary-general of London-based IMO.
Mitropoulos' assurances came from M.E. Fradkov, prime minister of the Russian Federation; I.E. Levitin, minister of transport; S. Frank, chairman of Sovcomflot; V.I. Matvienko, governor of St. Petersburg; and executives of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.
In particular, Russia agreed to support the IMO's Voluntary Member State Audit Scheme, and to continue work to safeguard marine life in the Gulf of Finland.
