Saia’s revenues inch up

Revenues at LTL carrier Saia rose by 2 percent, year over year, to $293 million during the second quarter, while operating income increased by 10 percent to $23.3 million.
LTL yield during the quarter increased by 3.2 percent on the strength of pricing, but tonnage fell by 1.6 percent on fewer shipments (a 0.9-percent drop) and lighter cargo (a 0.7-percent drop in weight).
So far this year, revenues of $566 million are even with the fist six months of 2012. Operating income has increased from $32.2 million to $37.8 million, and net income is up as well.
“While volumes during the quarter were relatively soft in line with the general economy, we continue to advance our value proposition with investments in quality and focus on customer service,” Saia’s chief executive officer, Rick O’Dell, said in a statement. “I believe that our focus on quality, customer service, revenue management and operational excellence has set the stage for solid financial performance in the second half of the year.” – Jon Ross
