The port’s revenues have declined the past two years, but Wurster was able to balance the budget by cutting back the use of consultants, limiting travel for port employees, initiating a hiring freeze and implementing a one-day-per-month furlough, according to the port.
Wurster gave no reason for his departure other than to say it was time to move on.
The port’s two cargo terminals in San Diego and National City handle a variety of products, including autos, lumber, bananas, sand and windmill parts.
