SAS partners with Emirates for Hong Kong cargo    Scandanavian Airlines Systems has preserved its all-freighter service between Gothenburg, Sweden, and Hong Kong by signing a “blocked space” agreement with Emirates SkyCargo.
   The contract with Dubai-based Emirates to transport large shipments for its customers replaces a recently expired contract with Lufthansa Cargo.
   Emirates is operating a 747-400F two times per week between Gothenburg/Dubai/Hong Kong. Emirates charters the planes and crew from Purchase, N.Y.-based Atlas Air. Departure days are Saturday and Monday, the same as with Lufthansa. It is the first time Emirates has offered all-cargo service to Hong Kong.
   SAS Cargo said none of its partners in the WOW alliance, which includes Singapore Airlines and Japan Airlines, had capacity SAS needed, so the cargo division went outside the alliance to fill its need.
   Combined with cargo capacity onboard SAS Airbus 340 passenger flights to China, SAS Cargo’s freight capacity directly to China is about 400 tons per week, with other stops in Shanghai and Beijing. SAS did not say how much space it was reserving on the Emirates flights.
   SAS said it might add more capacity to Hong Kong in the spring.
