Sawaya named USA*Engage director
Richard Sawaya has been named director of USA*Engage, a Washington-based advocacy group that promotes alternatives to the use of unilateral U.S. sanctions.
Sawaya succeeds Susan Frank, who recently joined Lockheed Martin.
Prior to joining USA*Engage, Sawaya served with a number of U.S. business organizations and associations. He joined Atlantic Richfield Co. in 1979, where he remained until 2000. He served as director of government and tax affairs, and director of international affairs in ARCO’s Washington office.
Sawaya is credited for heading ARCO’s legal re-entry into Iran and helped the firm negotiate exploration contracts with Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. He also worked on ARCO’s participation in the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and secured the endorsement of the Gore-Chenomydrin Commission for ARCO’s partnership with LUKoil.
After leaving ARCO, Sawaya founded the U.S.-Venezuela Business Council in 2001, focusing on U.S. corporate investment in Venezuela.
