SCI plans vessel acquisition spree
State-owned Shipping Corp. of India plans to purchase as many as 62 vessels in the next five years, the ocean carrier's managing director said Friday.
The aggressive vessel acquisition plans are a part of the Indian government's 11th five-year plan. But SCI Chairman and Managing Director S. Hajara did not specify which type of vessels would be acquired. SCI operates a diverse portfolio of vessels, but has limited capacity in the container-shipping segment.
The carrier is the world’s 39th-biggest container line by fleet capacity, with 30,907 TEUs of space from five owned vessels and five chartered vessels, according to maritime news service Alphaliner.
