SCPA handles record box volumes in March

The South Carolina Ports Authority handled 192,311 TEUs in March, surpassing the January 2017 record by more than 7,000 TEUs.    The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) handled 192,311 TEUs in March, up nearly 13 percent from March 2016, the port authority said Monday.
Box volumes for March, which were the highest for any month in the port authority’s history, surpassed the January 2017 record by more than 7,000 TEUs.
“The record volumes achieved by SCPA in March result from our broad-based efforts to increase our cargo base by providing good service to clients and enhancing our service offering,” SCPA President and CEO Jim Newsome said. “We are excited about the further deployment of large containerships, including the first 13,000-TEU containership in May.”
According to ocean carrier schedule and capacity database BlueWater Reporting’s Port Dashboard tool, the Port of Charleston is called by 29 liner services, 22 of which deploy containerships.
In addition to the Port of Charleston, SCPA comprises the Port of Georgetown, its breakbulk and bulk cargo port, and Inland Port Greer. Just last month, SCPA broke ground on the new Inland Port Dillon, which is slated to open in early 2018.
