SCPA’s box volumes soar in January

In pier container volumes, or boxes handled, the port authority moved 104,792 boxes in January, surpassing the prior record of 104,003 containers in May 2015.    The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) handled 185,018 TEUs in January, up 27.5 year-over-year. Loaded imports in January stood at 83,098 TEUs, loaded exports reached 66,868 TEUs and empties totaled 35,052 TEUs, according to statistics released by the SCPA.

   Operating revenues for January reached $19.5 million, while operating expenses totaled $16.9 million, year-over-year increases of 21.4 percent and 19.8 percent, respectively.
   Between July 1, 2016, which is when the fiscal year began, and Jan. 31, 2017, the SCPA’s two container terminals – the North Charleston and Wando Welch terminals, located at the Port of Charleston – handled 1.21 million TEUs, an 8.3 percent increase from the corresponding period a year prior.
   Overall, the south-Atlantic port is frequented by 25 fully cellular container services, according to BlueWater Reporting’s Port Dashboard tool, in addition to six loops deploying pure car/truck carriers.
   Rail moves at Inland Port Greer totaled 63,665 since the start of the fiscal year, a 28 percent year-over-year increase.
