Seattle port executive to helm Washington teachers union

Seattle port executive to helm Washington teachers union John Okamoto, the Port of Seattle's chief administrative officer, has accepted the position of executive director with the 81,000-member Washington Education Association.
   The statewide teachers union represents K-12 and higher education faculty as well as education-support professionals.
   Okamoto, who managed public affairs, human resources and government and labor affairs, will leave the port on May 9.
   Okamoto was criticized by a Port Commission report last year regarding the handling of a scandal involving sexually explicit and racist e-mails sent by port police staff.
   The report found that port executives, including Okamoto, exercised 'poor judgment' in allowing the port police to conduct an internal investigation of the e-mails.
