Port Chief Executive Officer Tay Yoshitani wrote in a letter to employees that he has asked union leaders to make similar arrangements with union workers to offset an expected $9 million budget shortfall this year.
About half of the port’s 1,700 workers are non-union and the unpaid leave is expected to save the port $3 million, the report said. The port is also cutting its travel budget in half and freezing hiring plans.
