Senate moves quickly to confirm Loy

The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee Friday unanimously voted to forward to the full Senate the nomination of Adm. James Loy as deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

If confirmed, Loy would be second in command under Tom Ridge at the department and have responsibility over the Transportation Security Agency as well. Loy, administrator of the Transportation Security Administration, is well respected on Capitol Hill despite complaints about aviation security, and he is expected to be confirmed without much difficulty.

President Bush nominated Loy for the position less than a month ago. Homeland Security officials have yet to name his full-time replacement at TSA.
