Ship runs aground at Port of Brunswick

The U.S. Coast Guard said the car carrier Amity Ace was successfully refloated and moved to a dock facility at Colonel’s Island in Brunswick, Ga., Friday afternoon.

The 653-foot cargo ship ran aground in the Brunswick River about two miles east of the Sidney Lanier Bridge Friday morning.

The Panamanian-flag ship lost propulsion around 5 a.m. while entering the Port of Brunswick just south of Brunswick Point.

The ship’s pilot immediately contacted the Coast Guard after grounding on the north side of the channel.

A hull survey was to be conducted to see if there was any damage, and Coast Guard inspectors would review it to ensure the seaworthiness of the vessel before departure.
