Shipco taps solar power

Non-vessel-operating common carrier Shipco Transport, through an agreement with Renewvia Energy, will power its New York warehouse, International Cargo Terminals, exclusively from a 1.26 megawatt rooftop solar system.
The system is made up of 5,300 panels and will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 247 tons annually, according to Renewvia Energy.
“Paired with our electric forklifts and tree saving block and brace procedures, we are now functioning with a very minimal impact on the environment,” said Michael Tiernan, vice president of International Cargo Terminals, in a statement.
In connection with the solar panel technology, the Shipco and ICT facility employ compact florescent lights controlled by occupancy sensors to reduce the amount of energy used. Additionally, the New York facility’s location in relation to the ports cuts down on carbon emissions due to the transport of containers back and forth, the NVO said.
“Solar panels are just the beginning,” said Christian Mogelvang, Shipco’s global chief operating officer. “We are committed to environmental sustainability and we plan to work towards reducing our carbon footprint at all of our other locations in the future.”
Shipco is a subsidiary of Scan-Group, an international shipping and transportation company based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and has more than 2,000 employees in own offices worldwide.
