SoCal port volume down 5% in June

SoCal port volume down 5% in June    Southern California's two ports had divergent container volume growth patterns in June, according to Los Angeles and Long Beach statistics.
   The two ports collectively handled 1.2 million TEUs in June, a roughly 5 percent drop from the same month in 2010. Los Angeles's throughput sunk 12.3 percent to 640,794 TEUs, while Long Beach's volume rose 12 percent to 554,269 TEUs.
   Long Beach saw increases in loaded imports (3.5 percent to 271,113 TEUs) and loaded exports (9 percent to 126,588 TEUs). Exports from Los Angeles grew 5.6 percent to 163,137 TEUs, but loaded imports fell 10.2 percent to 333,894 TEUs.
   Also noticeable was a 29.5 percent drop in empties moved through Los Angeles. In contrast, Long Beach saw a 10.3 percent rise in empties.
   For the year, Los Angeles volume is up 2.8 percent at 3.8 million TEUs, while Long Beach volume is up 6.2 percent at nearly 3 million TEUs.
