The vessel Auriga Leader has 328 solar panels affixed to the top deck to offset fuel consumption and reduce air pollution.
The vessel is owned and operated by NYK Line and transports Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles from Toyota Motor Corp. factories in Japan to the Port of Long Beach. The vessel is the first in its class — pure car carrier — to use solar technology, the Long Beach port authority said.
