South African Airways joins Cargo 2000 South African Airways has become the 29th airline and third African business to join Cargo 2000, an International Air Transport Association-sponsored standardized management system.
   Cargo 2000 is designed to improve cargo service by streamlining processes, establishing performance indicators, and automating costly manual, paper-based functions.
   'This is an opportunity we cannot afford to miss as it brings together airlines and the freight forwarding community in order to improve the management and visibility of air cargo transportation,' said Justice Luthuli, operations executive for SSA Cargo, in a statement.
   SSA Cargo transports more than 200,000 tons of cargo a year, serving routes in Europe, Asia Pacific, the Americas and other destinations in Africa. Besides using the belly space of its passenger planes, SSA Cargo also operates two Boeing 737-300 freighters, two Boeing 737-200 freighters, and a Hawker Siddeley 748 freighter for the domestic and African markets.
   In addition to airlines, Cargo 2000's membership includes forwarders, ground handlers, trucking companies and information technology providers.
