Spirit Airlines now top Fort Lauderdale carrier

Spirit Airlines now top Fort Lauderdale carrier Miramar-based Spirit Airlines, bolstered by the addition of new flights to Latin America and the Caribbean, has become the top volume carrier at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
   Statistics for May show Spirit had 1.8 million passengers for the month, giving it 15.3 percent of all passengers and moving it ahead of Southwest Airlines and Delta, which has historically been the largest carrier at the airport. Southwest has 13.6 percent of the traffic, and Delta had 13.3 percent, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
   Spirit has aggressively expanded its international services this year, adding flights to Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru.
   Driven in part by Spirit's new business, the airport reported a 21 percent increase in international travelers.
