St. Augustine Lighthouse shines on containers-for-homeless project

St. Augustine Lighthouse shines on containers-for-homeless project    The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum said it will help Flagler College's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team compete for a $250,000 grant from PepsiCo to fund its Ocean Shipping Containers for a Cause project.
'We at the Lighthouse and the First Light Society are avid supporters of all things maritime and of true community service,' said Peter Spiller, board president for the Florida Shipowners Group and member of the First Light Maritime Society trustees board, in a statement.
'When I saw this project to provide affordable living spaces for the homeless by turning maritime shipping containers into houses, I knew we could help,' he said.
Spiller has teamed up with Kathy Fleming, executive director of the First Light Maritime Society, which runs the St. Augustine Lighthouse and its maritime archaeological program known as LAMP. Together they're reaching out to international shipping companies, lighthouse groups, heritage tourist and maritime enthusiasts to encourage them to vote for SIFE and the Flagler project.
'This repurposing of maritime shipping containers fits right in our service mind-set,' Fleming said.
Pepsi will award $250,000 to the project receiving the most online votes in a single month. Voting started Dec. 1. Learn more about the Flagler College project and vote here. You can also text your vote at text number 104881 to Pepsi (73774).
