Starbucks breaks ground on new roasting plant

Starbucks Coffee Co. has broken ground on construction of its new Sandy Run roasting facility in Calhoun County, S.C.

The roasting facility will be located in the Calhoun County Industrial Park, about 15 miles from Columbia. Operations at the 120,000-square-foot plant are planned to begin in late 2008.

When fully operational, the plant could ship as many as 2,600 truckloads of roasted coffee annually to Starbucks distribution centers and retail customers.

Earlier this year the company said Charleston and Savannah are likely options for green coffee imports destined for the South Carolina roasting plant.
