According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, transportation from the United States via truck totaled $56.2 billion, while $14.9 billion worth of goods traveled by rail and the rest moved by pipeline. Surface trade between the United States and Canada and Mexico totaled 21 percent of total foreign trade from the United States in November.
Trade between the United States and Canada amounted to $46.7 billion, with truck transport accounting for $28.89 billion in imports and exports, and goods shipped by rail totaling $8.8 billion. Michigan, Illinois, California and Ohio were Canada’s biggest trading partners. Texas stood apart as Mexico’s biggest trading partner, followed by California, Michigan and Illinois. U.S. companies sent $27.2 billion worth of goods to Mexico via truck, exporting $28.9 billion. Rail trade with Mexico totaled $6.04 billion in November.
The vast majority of the goods exported to Canada were non-railway vehicles, with most of the imports involving the oil and gas business. Computer-related machinery and electrical machinery were also big exports. The biggest imports from Mexico included electrical machinery, non-railway vehicles and computer-related parts. Computer parts and electrical machinery were the biggest exports in November. – Jon Ross
