For the last five years, he was managing director of Lehigh University's Center for Value Chain Research in Bethlehem, Pa.
Sutherland has also provided independent supply chain management advice for 17 years through his own company, Envoy Inc. In 2004 he was brought in by a private equity company to help turn around Air Road Express, where he served as president and chief operating officer until 2006.
During his three-decade career, Sutherland has also held key logistics management positions with International Paper, Formica Corp., Fisons-Curtin Matheson Scientific, CSX-Sealand Logistics and Denso.
Sutherland has served as chairman of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, which gave him its Distinguished Service Award in 2009.
'Joel's dual background in industry and academics makes him the perfect choice to lead the institute,' said David Pyke, dean of USD's School of Business Administration, in a statement. 'He will be a great resource on national and global issues involving energy, high technology, manufacturing and other industries.'
'I see the institute providing greater levels of educational value to industry in a world where integrated supply chains are critical to our everyday lives and there is an ever-increasing demand for talent from leading universities such as USD,' Sutherland said.
He succeeds Simon Croom, who has returned to teaching full time at USD.
A native of southern California, Sutherland holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Southern California with a focus on logistics and an MBA from Pepperdine University. He has taught logistics at USC and often speaks to professional groups and universities around the world. He is also a frequent commentator on supply chain issues for media outlets such as National Public Radio, Forbes magazine and the Wall Street Journal.
