Tacoma container volumes remain healthy

   Container volumes at the Port of Tacoma increased 13.3 percent to 105,289 TEUs in January.

   By comparison, In January 2010 container volumes fell 15 percent in Tacoma.

   International containers increased 18 percent to 71,902 TEUs. Domestic container moves for Alaska and Hawaii rose 4.5 percent to 33,387 TEUs.

   Overall, international and domestic intermodal rail lifts were up 12 percent.

   While many ports, especially on the West Coast, experienced a strong rebound in volumes last year, Tacoma's volumes continued to decline the first half of the year before flattening out and finally increasing 11.8 percent in December to 130,332 TEUs.

   The port's 2010 container volume fell 5.8 percent to 1.45 million TEUs, with export container volumes down 19.8 percent to 337,538 TEUs.
