Tacoma to host IKEA distribution center

IKEA will build an 834,000-square foot distribution center near the Port of Tacoma after the port commission Tuesday authorized the sale of 70 acres of land to the Swedish home furnishings retailer.

The facility, which will have capacity to expand to more than 1 million square feet, will serve as the primary warehouse for IKEA stores in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, as well as Utah, Oregon and Washington. It will also supply other stores across the country as needed, the port said.

The distribution center is located in an industrial area 13 miles south of the port and the two are linked by a short-line railroad.
