Tanjung Pelepas tops 1 million TEU traffic in first quarter
Malaysia’s fast-growing container port of Tanjung Pelepas said its first-quarter box traffic rose 5 percent to 1 million TEUs, the first time it topped 1 million TEUs since it started operations in 1999.
In the first quarter of 2004, the South East Asia deepwater container port handled 957,495 TEUs.
The greatest percentage increase in the latest quarter came from export cargo, which was up 37 percent to 34,709 TEUs. Transshipment traffic, which constitutes the core activity of the port, increased 4 percent to 960,117 TEUs in the first quarter.
