The decision to start a supporting shipping and logistics business is driven by the company's need to secure coal for its power plants, including coal from overseas markets. Despite its wide-ranging interests, including huge steel and automobile production units, Tata has never operated its own logistics or shipping divisions, making this its first foray into the industry.
