Teamsters, AFL-CIO propose penalty for El Salvador

Teamsters, AFL-CIO propose penalty for El Salvador    The America Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters have filed a petition with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to penalize El Salvador.
   The petition asks that El Salvador be removed from the U.S.'s list of beneficiary developing countries because of a pattern of denying worker rights.
   The Teamsters and the AFL-CIO charge that the Salvadoran government has 'structural deficiencies in labor laws that offer little or no protection against anti-union suspensions and dismissals, as well as anti-union discrimination in hiring.' The petition also alleges that El Salvador 'creates obstacles to union registration, and allows companies to circumvent the few labor law protections that do exist.'
