Temporary buoy at New York harbor entrance

Temporary buoy at New York harbor entrance The U.S. Coast Guard has installed a temporary buoy about 300 yards in front of the platform-mounted lighthouse near the entrance to the Ambrose Channel, the main shipping channel into New York harbor.
On Nov. 3, the structure reportedly suffered substantial damage to its legs, stanchion and the revolving light which was bent and no longer rotating after it was reportedly struck by the Axel Spirit, a 799-foot tanker ship operated by the Teekay Shipping Co., while it was going to the Chevron facility in Perth Amboy, N.J.
The Coast Guard Cutter Willow, a 225-foot vessel homeported in Newport, R.I., installed the temporary light buoy that will remain until Ambrose Light is restored.
“While the actual repair of Ambrose Light is a long-term project, the temporary navigation light that the Willow is putting in place will ensure safety standards are in place for all vessels entering New York Harbor,” said Lt.j.g. Kristin Conville, a Coast Guard Sector New York incident management officer.
The Ambrose Light is a 76-foot structure that is located about 12 miles southeast of Staten Island, N.Y., and guides ships in the main shipping lanes to New York Harbor. It is located about 4.5 miles outside the shipping channel.
There were no reported injuries or pollution as a result of the collision. The platform is not manned.
