The per-order reservation price for the trucks has also been raised to $20,000, up from the original $5,000 as announced by Tesla CEO Elon Musk at the unveiling event earlier this month. Additionally, Tesla said it will offer a “Founders Series” model for an upfront charge of $200,000, which guarantees the buyer one of the first 1,000 Semis produced. To justify the prices, Elon Musk has said that the new semi will have the lowest cost of ownership due to electric costs being half that of diesel.
According to FleetOwner, officials with the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have met with Tesla engineers to potentially include the semi in part of the ports’ efforts to reach zero emissions for all on-road equipment by 2035, said Chris Cannon, director of environmental management for the Port of Los Angeles.
