The country has prohibited U.S. beef imports since December 2003 after a cow in Washington state was determined to have bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or “mad cow” disease.
The United States has been working with Thailand and other countries to remove the remaining restrictions on U.S. beef.
“It is now time for Japan, South Korea, China and other Asian markets to follow suit,” said U.S. Agriculture Secretary Michael Johanns in a statement.
