THE SUSAN MAERSK, THE LARGEST CONTAINERSHIP TO CALL THE U.S., BERTHED AT LONG BEACH

    The 6,600-TEU Susan Maersk, the largest containership to call at a U.S. port, has berthed at the port of Long Beach.
    The ship, sailing on her maiden voyage, established a new record when she arrived at the port on Saturday as part of the joint Maersk/Sea-Land Europe/Asia/U.S. West Coast "TP6/AE5" service.
    Built by the A. P. Moller’s Odense shipyard, the Susan Maersk is 347-meter (1,138-feet) long, 42.8-meter ( 140-feet) wide and has a draft of 14.5 meters (47.5 feet).
    Tommy Thomsen, president of Maersk Inc., said that "the introduction of this class of superships will benefit American consumers and industry".
The ship was scheduled to sail yesterday (Monday) to Tacoma.
