Trailer Bridge joins EPA’s SmartWay program

Trailer Bridge joins EPAÆs SmartWay program Trailer Bridge, which offers an integrated trucking and marine freight service between the lower 48 states and Puerto Rico, announced that it has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Transport Partnership.
   Smartway is a collaborative program between the EPA, carriers, and shippers aimed at reducing pollution and increasing energy efficiency.
   Trailer Bridge said it would measure the environmental performance of power units in its trucking fleet and identify goals to improve the environmental performance of its tractors. It will also encourage shippers to consider participation in the partnership and track company performance to meet these goals
   Trailer Bridge said it will assist in the establishment of a marine category in the program by participating in EPA sponsored workshops, and measuring the environmental performance of its vessels.
   While there is not yet a marine component to the SmartWay program, Trailer Bridge Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John D. McCown, contended that greater fuel efficiency and cleaner fuel burned by tug-barge vessels makes them attractive when compared to self-propelled ships that burn traditional bunker fuel.
   “This environmental edge is becoming increasingly important for companies concerned about their environmental footprint,” he said.
