Truck restrictions unveiled for Maryland rail bridge

   A Costco distribution center that opened in Frederick County, Md., three years ago has worsened a problem with trucks getting stuck under a railroad pass because of the additional traffic. The State Highway Administration said Thursday it is implementing new restrictions on a section of MD Route 75 (Green Valley Road) near Monrovia, Md., to address the situation.
   Starting July 18, commercial vehicles over 48 feet long or 102 inches wide will be banned from using the road between Fingerboard Road and West Baldwin Road. Violations of the restriction carry a fine of up to $500.
   Low-clearance warning signs are already posted. The CSX rail bridge has space up to 12 feet, six inches high.
   The SHA said it will post signs about the new restriction on MD 75, as well as Fingerboard Board Road, MD 355, and the I-70 ramps to MD 75.
   SHA officials said they hope posting the actual dimensions for trucks that can safely pass will make it easier for drivers with oversize trailers to determine their vehicles are too large to go under the bridge. Traffic tie-ups can last several hours while emergency responders get trucks unstuck.
   Some drivers who have gotten stuck have said GPS devices misdirected them to continue on MD 75.
