Truck spot rates rise in June

   During the first week of June, spot market truck capacity fell by 8.8 percent from the previous week, pushing up van, reefer and flatbed rates, according to DAT.
   Van spot rates rose by 3.5 percent to an average of $2.05 per mile after falling by $0.04 during May. Compared to May 2013, however, last month’s rates were still up by 9.4 percent. During the first week of June, the average loads per truck increased from 3.1 to 4.8, a rise of 56 percent. Load availability rose 39 percent, as capacity dropped by 11 percent from the week before.
   From June 1-7, Flatbed rates increased by 3.4 percent, to $2.44, and reefer rates ticked up 2.6 percent, to $2.38. The reefer load-to-truck ratio shot up by 51 percent, while the ratio for flatbed services increased by 28 percent.
   For the first week of June, the average domestic fuel price fell by $0.03 to $3.89.
