Truckers question hazmat restrictions on the ôBig Digö

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) has asked the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for an administrative determination on whether federal law preempts highway routing designations issued by the City of Boston that restrict transportation of hazardous materials through the 'Big Dig.'

ATA alleges that Boston, in the course of construction of the Central Artery Tunnel–often referred to as the Big Dig–changed designated hazardous materials routes through Boston and, in doing so, failed to comply with the requirements of a federal law on how such restrictions must be made.

FMSCA will accept public comments on the issue through Sept. 22, and rebuttal comments by Nov. 6. For more information see http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2008/E8-18344.htm.
