TSA hires security firm to check airport workers

Kroll Government Service received a one-year contract worth almost $4.8 million to help the Transportation Security Administration process criminal background checks for airport screeners and security directors, agency headquarters staff, pilots applying to carry a firearm in the cockpit, and other aviation industry employees such as charter flight crews.

The TSA has been criticized by lawmakers and others for hiring thousands of screeners to meet congressionally mandated deadlines before completing background checks on all new hires. Many screeners were subsequently found to have criminal records disqualifying them from the job.
