TTI Long Beach to use Kalmar “SmartPort” process

The cargo handling solutions and services company Kalmar said it has been tapped by Long Beach’s Total Terminals International (TTI) to implement its SmartPort process automation.
TTI is a terminal operating affiliate of Hanjin Shipping and the largest single terminal in the Port of Long Beach. Kalmar is a subsidiary of cargo handling machinery maker Cargotec, which also owns the terminal operating system developer Navis.
The SmartPort process automation solutions include SmartQuay, which automates vessel discharge and load back operations; SmartLift and SmartStack process automation solutions; and the SmartMap visualisation tool.
SmartQuay uses optical character recognition (OCR) to identify a container, automatically identifies the terminal tractor/trailer set that receives it, and dispatches the correct work instruction to the tractor driver via a data terminal.
“A key element of the SmartStack solution is the Symeo sensor fusion positioning system.” Cargotec said. “This combines (differential GPS) and sensor data to ensure that an accurate position is obtained even in the event of DGPS signal blockage in the dense container ‘canyons.’
In the yard, Cargotec said SmartLift provides the correct work instruction to the lifting equipment, while SmartStack determines the final container position even if it differs from the work instruction. The entire discharge process is automated and requires no human intervention. – Eric Johnson
