Turner named to Umatilla port board

Port of Umatilla, Ore. commissioners have elected John Turner as the board's newest member.

Turner, who fills a vacancy on the five-member board created by the resignation of Bryan Brock in May, is president of Blue Mountain Community College.

A member of the Round-Up City Development Corp., Turner also serves on the Pendleton Convention Center Commission.

Turner was chosen over four other applicants for the commission seat — Jan Beitel, a local small business owner; David Fishel, a construction consultant; Arthur Hill, vice president of Blue Mountain Community College; and Clayton Peterson, a retired construction manager.

The Port of Umatilla, located in the northeast corner of Oregon on the Columbia River, has three container/bulk terminals, a grain facility and a petroleum distribution complex. Situated nearly 250 miles from the Pacific Ocean mouth of the Columbia River, the port is geographically one of the most inland container-handling ports on the West Coast.
