Two berths opened at Nansha Port (Phase II)
An opening ceremony was held today for two more berths at the Nansha Port (Phase II) on the western side of the Pearl River Delta in China.
Berths 5 and 6 will be managed and operated by Guangzhou South China Oceangate Container Terminal Co. Ltd., a joint venture between Guangzhou Port Group Co. Ltd. (59 percent) and COSCO Ports (Nansha) Ltd. (41 percent).
In August, Denmark’s A.P. Moller-Maersk bought a 33.9 percent equity interest in COSCO Ports (Nansha) from COSCO Pacific for an undisclosed amount.
Guangzhou South China Oceangate Container Terminal will build, manage and operate six berths (numbers 5 to 10) at the terminal project, which will have a handling capacity of 4.2 million TEUs and is expected to start operations by the end of next year.
Nansha Port Phase II will have a total quay length of 2,100 meters (6,890 feet), a water depth of 14.5 meters (48 feet) that could be dredged to 17 meters (56 feet) and a yard area of about 2.17 million square meters.
