Two cranes for new Fos container terminal

Two cranes for new Fos container terminal

CMA CGM and DP World said Monday they have taken delivery of the first two gantry cranes for their jointly developed new container terminal in the Port of Marseilles-Fos.

The terminal is due to open in March and is part of the Fos 2XL project, which aims to more than double container handling capacity at the Mediterranean port Fos deepwater complex. French container line CMA CGM, which is based in Marseilles, and Dubai-based terminal operator DP World won a 35-year concession in 2006 to develop and operate the terminal.

The companies said in the first phase of the terminal it can accommodate two 13,000-TEU ships simultaneously.

“CMA CGM is Fos’ biggest customer with three weekly services to Asia and North America, said Farid Salem, executive officer at CMA CGM. “This new terminal will allow us to handle an extra 2 million TEUs.”
