Two more “Giant Step” crew dead
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines today confirmed that another two Indian crew members from the iron ore carrier “Giant Step” have been found dead at sea.The “Giant Step,” with 25 Indian crewmembers and a Sri Lankan captain, went aground off eastern Japan last Friday. The death toll is now eight with two people still missing. Thirteen of the crew were rescued by Japan Coast Guard helicopters and three drifted ashore.
MOL said that the swell finally subsided Thursday allowing fuel tank oil spill prevention work to commence. “MOL will start full-scale oil removal work if weather and hydrographic conditions permit,” the Japanese carrier said.
