U.K. bans animal exports amid foot-and-mouth disease outbreak

The United Kingdom has imposed a voluntary ban on exports of all livestock while the government attempts to contain an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease at a farm in Surrey, England.

A previous epidemic in 2001 devastated the country’s farming industry with up to 10 million animals slaughtered and a cost to the economy estimated at about '8.5 billion ($11.7 billion).
